Life can be full of ups and downs, and often, the weight of disappointment and trauma can leave us living in fear. When we’ve experienced consistent letdowns, it’s natural to become hesitant about opening ourselves up to joy. We start expecting the worst even when things are going well.

Have you ever caught yourself thinking:

  • What if this doesn’t work out?

  • What if something bad happens?

  • What if God takes this good thing away?

This way of thinking slowly robs us of peace. We begin to grasp for control instead of trusting God, forgetting that He is still in charge. Whatever He allows will come to pass—but His Word also reminds us that His plans for us are good.

So how do we break free from the cycle of expecting disappointment and step into a place of peace and trust?

1. Live in the Moment (Mindfulness)

Practice being present. Instead of letting your mind race to the “what ifs,” focus on where you are right now. Allow yourself to enjoy the small blessings around you.

2. Take It One Day at a Time

Jesus reminds us in Matthew 6:34: “Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself.” Your strength is for today, not for problems that haven’t even happened yet.

3. Embrace Joy Without Fear

When something good happens, celebrate it. Receive it as a gift from God, not as something temporary that might be taken away. Happiness is not a trap—it’s part of His blessing for you.

4. Keep Your Mind on God’s Promises

Isaiah 26:3 says, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” Peace comes not from controlling outcomes but from fixing your mind on Him.
